Backyard Putting Green Installation in Austin, TX

Custom-designed putting greens with professional-grade ball roll, realistic contours, and year-round playability. Practice your short game without leaving your backyard.

Austin's Year-Round Golf Weather Deserves a Year-Round Green

Austin offers some of the best year-round golf weather in the country. With 300+ days of sunshine and mild winters, there is no reason your short game practice should be limited to weekends at the course. A backyard putting green gives you instant access to practice whenever you have 15 minutes—before work, after dinner, or during a break between meetings if you work from home.

The financial case is compelling. Austin-area courses charge $60–$100 per round, and that does not include the 30–45 minute drive each way. A golfer who plays twice a week spends $6,200–$10,400 per year on green fees alone. A backyard putting green costs $2,800–$10,800 depending on size, and lasts 15+ years with minimal maintenance. Even if it only replaces a fraction of your course visits, the payback period is remarkably short.

Beyond practice, a putting green is one of the most distinctive backyard features you can add to an Austin home. It is a conversation piece at every barbecue, a draw for neighborhood gatherings, and a genuine entertainment space that gets used far more often than most homeowners expect. Our putting green customers consistently tell us it is the most-used feature in their yard—by golfers and non-golfers alike.

What We Build

More Than Just a Flat Green

Every putting green we install is custom-designed with features that make practice realistic and engaging.

Custom Slopes & Contours

We sculpt the sub-base to create subtle undulations that produce realistic breaks. Left-to-right, right-to-left, uphill, downhill—we design the contours based on your skill level and the putts you want to practice. Typical grade changes of 1–3% create challenging but readable breaks that closely replicate real green conditions. Each green includes multiple pin positions with varying difficulty.

🌿

Fringe & Rough Areas

A putting green without fringe looks incomplete and limits your practice options. We surround every green with a collar of fringe turf (taller, textured fibers) that requires you to adjust your stroke just like approaching a real green. Rough areas beyond the fringe add another dimension to chip shots and bump-and-runs, creating a complete short game practice area.

🏌️

Chipping Zones

Adding a dedicated chipping area transforms a putting green into a complete short game complex. We install a separate turf surface 10–20 feet from the green edge at various elevations, giving you realistic chip shot practice from multiple distances and lies. This is where most golfers gain the most strokes, and having it in your backyard means daily practice is effortless.

🏖️

Practice Bunkers

For the serious golfer, we can integrate a practice bunker alongside your green. We build bunkers with proper drainage, real sand (or synthetic sand for lower maintenance), and a turf lip that replicates the challenge of an actual greenside bunker. This is our most premium add-on and the ultimate backyard golf feature for dedicated players.

Our Process

How We Design Your Custom Putting Green

Step 1: On-Site Consultation

We visit your property to assess the available space, measure dimensions, evaluate existing drainage and grade, and discuss your vision. We talk about your golf game: what putts do you struggle with? What distances do you want to practice? Do you want a chipping area? A bunker? How many pin positions? This conversation shapes every design decision. We also bring turf samples so you can see and feel the putting surface before committing.

Step 2: Topography Assessment

We survey the existing grade of your yard to understand natural drainage patterns, identify any grading challenges (common in Austin’s hilly terrain), and determine how the green will integrate with surrounding landscaping and hardscaping. This assessment also identifies whether we can work with the existing grade to create natural-looking contours or need to bring in additional material to build up the putting surface.

Step 3: Custom Design

Based on the consultation and site assessment, we create a detailed design plan that includes the green shape and dimensions, pin positions, contour map showing slopes and breaks, fringe and rough areas, chipping zones, and any additional features like bunkers or lighting. We review this plan with you and make revisions until it matches your vision exactly. There is no charge for the design if you proceed with installation.

Step 4: Construction

Construction begins with excavation and sub-base preparation. We build the contours and slopes into the compacted base material, which is the most craft-intensive part of the process. Getting the grade changes right at this stage is critical—the turf conforms to whatever surface is beneath it, so the sub-base must be sculpted precisely. After the base is finalized and compacted, we install the putting turf, fringe turf, infill, and cups. Most greens take 3–5 days from start to first putt.

Pricing

Putting Green Pricing

Custom putting green installation costs $14–$18 per square foot, fully installed. This includes excavation, custom sub-base contouring, GreensMaster putting turf, fringe turf, calibrated sand infill, regulation cups, and flags.

Typical project sizes and costs:

  • Small green (200–300 sqft): $2,800–$5,400. Two to three pin positions, basic contours. Ideal for tight backyards or side yards.
  • Medium green (300–500 sqft): $4,200–$9,000. Three to four pin positions, more complex contours, fringe surround. Our most popular size.
  • Large green with chipping area (500–800 sqft): $7,000–$14,400. Full short game complex with multiple chipping distances, extensive fringe, and detailed contouring.

The ROI calculation: An Austin golfer playing twice a week at $80/round spends $8,320 per year on green fees. A 400 sqft putting green at $16/sqft costs $6,400 installed. Even if the putting green only replaces one round per week, it pays for itself in 18 months. Over its 15-year lifespan, the savings compared to equivalent course time exceed $100,000. Add in the time saved commuting to courses (30–45 minutes each way), and the case becomes overwhelming.

What Our Putting Green Customers Say

"I work in tech and my schedule is unpredictable. Getting to the course for a full round is a twice-a-month thing at best. Now I practice putting for 20 minutes every morning before logging on. The green they built in my Bee Cave backyard is 450 sqft with four pins and genuinely challenging breaks. My handicap has dropped three strokes since the install. The ball roll is remarkably consistent—very close to the greens at Falconhead. Worth every penny."

"We had a 600 sqft green with a chipping area installed in our Steiner Ranch backyard. It has become the center of every gathering we host. Neighbors, friends, colleagues—everyone wants to putt. My wife does not golf and even she uses it constantly. The contours are well-designed with enough challenge to keep it interesting but not so extreme that beginners get frustrated. The fringe detail around the edges looks fantastic."

Michael T. Steiner Ranch, Austin

"Retired and play golf four times a week. I wanted a putting green I could use daily to keep my short game sharp. Austin Turf & Stone built a 350 sqft green in my Sun City backyard with three pins and realistic breaks. The build quality is excellent—the contours are subtle but they force you to read the green just like at the course. I use it every single day. Easily the best investment I have made in my golf game."

FAQ

Putting Green Questions

Backyard putting greens cost $14–$18 per square foot installed. A compact 200 sqft green runs $2,800–$3,600. A medium 400 sqft green with three to four pins costs $5,600–$7,200. A larger 600 sqft short game complex with chipping area and fringe runs $8,400–$10,800. All prices include excavation, custom sub-base contouring, putting turf, fringe turf, calibrated infill, regulation cups, and flags.

Our GreensMaster turf delivers a stimpmeter rating of 10–11, which is comparable to well-maintained country club greens. The dense, texturized nylon fibers create consistent ball roll with true break on contoured sections. The speed can be adjusted by varying the infill depth—more sand slows the green, less sand speeds it up. Most golfers find the putting experience closely mirrors real green conditions, especially once the contours introduce realistic break patterns.

Most backyard putting greens take 3–5 days to install. Day 1–2: excavation, sub-base preparation, and contour shaping (the most time-intensive and skill-critical phase). Day 3–4: turf installation, seaming, infill, and cup placement. Day 5 (if needed): finishing details, fringe installation, and final adjustments. Complex designs with chipping areas, bunkers, or significant grade changes may extend the timeline to 5–7 days.

Yes, and this is where the craft of putting green construction really matters. We sculpt subtle undulations directly into the compacted sub-base material, creating realistic grade changes of 1–3% that produce readable breaks. We can design left-to-right breaks, right-to-left breaks, uphill approaches, and downhill speed putts. During the design consultation, we discuss your skill level and the specific types of putts you want to practice, then engineer the contours accordingly. Multiple pin positions ensure variety—each cup location plays differently because of the surrounding contours.

Very little, especially compared to maintaining a real putting green (which requires daily mowing, watering, fertilizing, aeration, and fungicide treatment). Brush the surface with a stiff-bristle broom every two to three weeks to keep the nylon fibers upright and maintain consistent ball roll. Remove leaves and debris with a leaf blower as needed. Rinse with a garden hose periodically. That is the entire routine—about 15–20 minutes per month. No mowing, no watering, no chemical treatments.

At $60–$100 per round at Austin-area courses like Avery Ranch, Falconhead, or Grey Rock, a golfer who plays twice a week spends $6,200–$10,400 per year on green fees alone. A 400 sqft putting green costs approximately $6,000–$7,200 installed and lasts 15+ years with minimal maintenance. If the putting green replaces just one round per week, it pays for itself within 12–18 months. Over its full lifespan, the savings compared to equivalent course fees exceed $100,000—not including time saved on commuting, which averages 60–90 minutes per round trip for most Austin golfers.
